Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1, even better than perfect?

Being addicted to technology is hard; something better is always around the corner. Not even two weeks ago I was writing about the soon-to-be-released Garmin nuviphone and it has already been knocked off of my radar by the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 due mid-2008. I still think that the nuviphone is a compelling product and will find a decent market as it just makes sense to combine Garmin’s great nuvi GPS navigation system with a cell phone. The game changer there is adding internet capabilities to the GPS device which greatly enhances it’s capabilities.

The XPERIA X1 however is the closest any company has come to my ideal cell phone/portable communications device. It also has the advantage of elegant design.

The key features that attract me:

  • Arc slider QWERTY keyboard that’s large enough to use comfortably; Sorry Apple, the iPhone is beautiful, but I need tactile feedback
  • WiFi, always good to have higher speeds available
  • GPS, a must have for me
  • 800 x 480 64K color display
  • MicroSD instead of something like Memory Stick
  • great size and weight, 110 x 53 x 16.7 mm and 145 grams; a little on the thick side, but not overly so, considering the slide out keyboard
  • a fast enough processor to run Windows Mobile 6 smoothly
  • Windows Mobile 6, much better than previous versions and seeing that I still use Microsoft products for business purposes, it makes sense

The things I’m worried about

  • Windows Mobile 6, it’s gotten much better over the years, but I’m concerned that it’s still too bloated for a device like a smart phone. Also, the thought of possibly having to reboot my phone doesn’t appeal to me, if it’s not absolutely stable it will get tossed in the junk pile.
  • Whether or not there will be any quirks that ruin it for me

So far it’s stacking up to be a great phone and I can’t wait to get my hands on it.

Such is the life of a gadget junkie… *sigh*
